What is professional identity?

Professional identity (PI) refers to your self-concept and how you define yourself in professional settings.

PI is based on your personal beliefs and values, previous experiences, and attributes and skills (Ibarra, 1999). As you develop your skills and broaden experiences, your PI will change. PI informs your career goals and professional aspirations.
